The Importance of Soft Skills in the Hospitality Industry

Do you know how people always emphasise the significance of technical abilities? Well, that's true, but there is another aspect to consider. It is the softer, interpersonal skills that can truly impact your job search. Let's explore that further.

So, think of hard skills as the ones you can learn from books or training courses. The qualifications and certifications we proudly list on our resumes. For example, in hospitality, industry, could be knowing how to use a specific PMS (Property Management System)  or being really good at standards, procedures and protocols. These skills are important, but they are just one aspect of what employers consider when hiring. Now, let's talk about soft skills.

These are the ones that are a harder to measure or learn. They are the things that make us great at working with people. Such as staying calm in tough situations, thinking creatively to solve problems, or communicating effectively. Especially in the hospitality industry, where you are constantly dealing with guests and associates, these soft skills are super important.

But which soft skills are the most important? Well, in my experience, leadership and teamwork are right up there at the top. These are skills we can actually work on, and improve over the time. By learning from people and being open to feedback, we can become better leaders and team players.

And then there are other soft skills worth mentioning too. Things like staying positive, problem solving, being a team player, and showing empathy mark the difference. You might not write these on a resume, but they really affect how we deal with others every day.
