Housekeeping: Where Size Matters

When it comes to housekeeping management, the size of the hotel can make a big difference. Whether it's a small boutique hotel or a large resort, the size of the property can impact the operations and challenges faced by the housekeeping department.
Working in a small hotel, like the one I experienced in Brussels, had its advantages. With a limited number of rooms and a stable occupancy, the housekeeping operations were relatively easy. I knew every room and every cleaner, and could even predict the mistakes made by each cleaning attendant before they happened. It was like a well choreographed dance.
However, managing a large or medium sized hotel is a whole different ballgame. In these cases, automation, standardisation, and structure become crucial. The housekeeping department needs to function like a well oiled machine, similar to a perfect Swiss watch. Without proper organisation and systems in place, it can quickly become a chaotic mess, resembling a battlefield.
One of the biggest challenges in managing housekeeping in a large hotel is the volume of rooms that need to be cleaned. With hundreds or even thousands of rooms, it becomes essential to have efficient processes in place to ensure that every room is cleaned thoroughly and in a timely manner. This often requires the use of technology, such as a proper PMS (Property Management System) and tracking software, to streamline the workflow and allocate resources effectively.
Another aspect that becomes more complex in larger hotels is the coordination and communication between the housekeeping staff and other departments. With multiple floors, departments, and shifts, it's crucial to have clear communication channels and protocols in place to ensure that everyone is on the same page. This can include regular meetings, digital communication tools, and well defined standard operating procedures. Proper training and ongoing development programs are essential to ensure that the staff is equipped to handle their respective roles effectively.
While managing housekeeping in a large hotel can be challenging, it also presents opportunities for growth and innovation. With the right systems and processes in place, it's possible to achieve high levels of efficiency and guest satisfaction. Additionally, technology advancements, such as the use of smart devices and automation, can further enhance the housekeeping operations and improve the overall guest experience.
The size of the hotel does matter when it comes to housekeeping management. Whether it's a small hotel with a personal touch or a large hotel with complex operations, each presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. By implementing effective systems, communication channels, and training programs, housekeeping departments can navigate these challenges and deliver exceptional service to guests, no matter of the size.
