In the hospitality industry, each interaction has the power to influence the guest experience. As a department manager, I've realised the importance of offering the same level of hospitality and respect to every individual who pursues an opportunity within the organisation.

Applications and interviews are not merely administrative tasks; they are opportunities to foster connections and showcase the ethos of our department. When an applicant knocks on your door, They should be welcomed with gratitude and warmth, just like we would greet a guest entering our establishment. No matter how many applicants there are or how many staff  you currently have, each person deserves attention and consideration.

I firmly believe that hospitality goes beyond service, it is a kind of entertainment business, a show where everyone has a vital part to play to our guest. But also to entertain our applicants, to engage with them sincerely, and to create an environment where they feel valued and respected.

As a department manager, I've learned that the effectiveness of our team directly impacts the quality of our product. Similar to sports, like football, where a strong bench ensures resilience, it's essential to have a group of enthusiastic applicants prepared to join our team. This process begins with the initial interaction, a job interview that isn't just an standardise process but a genuine conversation where curiosity guides us instead of relying solely on scripted.

It´s crucial to remember that applicants are not just seeking a job, they are seeking a place where they can contribute and grow. Therefore, transparency about job expectations and conditions is paramount.  We should make it clear to them what the role involves and the level of commitment it requires.

Furthermore, it's crucial for both managers and employees to respect and comprehend one another. Despite our job titles or attire, we are all individuals striving for employment and advancement. This attitude encourages teamwork and a feeling of togetherness, where everyone, from the leader of a team to someone just starting out, is working towards the same objective.

As heads of departments, it's crucial to understand the importance of every interaction, even the brief ones. Each person applying could become a new team member or a beneficial contact in our network. By showing hospitality and professionalism to everyone, we not only enhance their experience but also build a culture of respect and teamwork in our organisation.

The hospitality must be present in every moment, it's present in every interaction, even during hiring. When we adopt this mindset and treat every applicant as an important guest, we not only make their experience better but also improve our team and the industry overall.
